New Book Study

“The Human Condition” is a short 45-page powerful book. It was published in 1999, as a compilation of a lecture series given by Thomas Keating at the Harvard Divinity School. Keating was an American Trappist priest known as one of the principal developers of centering prayer.

The book, which will be supplied for you, describes humanity’s innate search for happiness. Through the lens of modern psychology’s understanding of the development of the ego, and through the lens of a theologian and spiritual teacher, we will explore how our development in early years establishes our unique and personal “programs for happiness,” how we can recognize them as “false programs,” and how we can begin to overcome them as we grow and mature spiritually.

Both in-person and on-line Zoom options are being offered. Each session will include a short contemplative practice to help us center, relax and focus. Then, assigned readings and questions will be discussed by the group, as well as other insights or curiosities.

The in person option will beet at the Warrensburg Church of the Brethren on Fridays from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Dates are February 6, February 20, March 6, March 20, April 3 and April 17.

The on-line Zoom option will be held on Thursdays from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Dates are February 12, February 26, March 12, March 26, April 9 and April 23

When registering, please indicate whether you will be attending the in-person or on-line Zoom sessions. Also, please let us know if you need a copy of the book if you don’t happen to have it already.
